Colour Protect series · Step 2

Dr Scalp Colour Protect Conditioner

Ends that go brassy and rough weeks before the roots need doing.

Hair that felt like silk leaving the salon and like straw by the third wash.

On coloured hair the lengths are not the supporting act. The colour lives in the shaft, the damage is in the shaft, and the fade happens there. Your scalp is barely involved.

A rinse-out conditioner with macadamia and jojoba oils and wheat protein, for hair that has been lifted.

  1. After shampooing, squeeze the water out of your hair first. A shaft already full of water cannot take anything else in.
  2. Work it through from mid-length to ends, concentrating on the oldest, most-lifted part.
  3. Leave it a minute, then rinse with lukewarm water. Cold is better still if you can bear it.
  4. Every wash. On coloured hair this is not the optional step.

Fit

Is this the right one for you?

One problem per series. This is the Colour Protect series. If your main problem is something else, one of the other five will do more for you than this will.

Choose this if

  • Your ends go brassy and rough before your roots need doing
  • Your hair was lifted or bleached to get the colour you have
  • It felt like silk leaving the salon and like straw by the third wash
  • You are already using the Colour Protect shampoo

Look elsewhere if

  • You want a toning or colour-refreshing product, this deposits nothing
  • Greying and you would rather not dye it, Age-Defying
  • Grease rather than fade, Oil Control
  • Flakes are the main problem, Anti-Dandruff

This one is about your hair, not your scalp.

Every other series on this website treats a scalp condition, and the scan reads the scalp. This one is the exception, and on coloured hair the lengths are where everything happens. If you have a scalp problem as well, treat that first, because it will work against everything this is doing. The scan settles it in fifteen minutes and it is free with any order.

Why it works

On coloured hair, the lengths are not the supporting act.

Getting colour into hair means lifting the cuticle to let dye molecules in. That change does not reverse. The shaft stays more porous, holds less water and loses dye faster than it did before, and the further from your scalp a section is the longer it has been living with that. Your ends have been through every wash, every blow-dry and every afternoon of Singapore sun since the day they were coloured.

So this one works where the problem is. The base is macadamia oil third and jojoba oil eighth, with panthenol seventh, hydrolyzed wheat protein for a porous shaft, and the same cranberry, lingzhi and Moroccan chamomile antioxidants the shampoo carries. Twenty-four ingredients in total, the shortest list of anything we sell, and every one of them on the ingredient list in the buy panel above.

What it will not do. It deposits no colour. It will not tone brass, refresh a faded shade or correct anything, and if that is what you want you need a different kind of product which we do not make. It also will not stop fade, because nothing does. What it does is keep the lengths in a condition where the colour you have left still looks like colour rather than like straw.

What it actually does

Four jobs, and toning is not one of them.

There is no colourant in this bottle, so it cannot enhance your colour or tone it. Here is what is actually in it and what that actually does.

01 · It works where the colour lives

Mid-length to ends

The dye is in the shaft, the damage is in the shaft, and so is the fade. On coloured hair the lengths are the product, not the afterthought.

02 · Two oils and a protein, for a porous shaft

Macadamia third, jojoba eighth, wheat protein fourteenth

Macadamia third, jojoba eighth, wheat protein fourteenth. Lifting the cuticle made the shaft porous; these are what fill and smooth it between washes.

03 · The same antioxidants as the shampoo

Cranberry, lingzhi, vitamin E

Cranberry, lingzhi and vitamin E, the same group as the shampoo. The two are formulated as a pair rather than sold as one.

04 · It deposits nothing

No colourant, no toning, no refresh

There is no pigment in this bottle. It will not neutralise brass or refresh a faded shade — if that is what you want, you want a toning product.

How you will know it worked

Judge this one against your calendar, not your mirror.

The scan does not measure colour; it photographs the scalp. The honest measure here is your next appointment — if the gap stretches, it worked.

What to expect

Week by week, and the week that actually counts.

This is the one product in the range you can feel on the first wash, which is also why it is easy to overrate. The signal worth waiting for is a date in your diary.

  1. Week 1–2It combs out on the first washLess catching at the ends, more slip. Immediate, obvious, and not the thing to judge it on.
  2. Week 3–6The third-wash straw feeling stopsThe stretch where coloured hair usually turns rough. If your ends are still behaving here, that is the real signal.
  3. Week 8The week to judge itJudge it against the calendar: has your next appointment moved later than it usually would? Book the free scan too, because a scalp condition underneath is working against you.
  4. Month 3–6The ends survive the cycleHair that reaches its next colour appointment in a condition your colourist does not comment on. On lifted hair that is the whole ambition.
The Colour Protect routine

Step two of two, and the masque that goes with them.

There is no Colour Protect tonic, because fade is a hair problem rather than a scalp one. The shampoo is where the mechanism lives, keeping the cuticle shut. This one looks after the lengths, which on lifted hair are the oldest and most damaged part of the head. The Restoration Masque is the weekly step, five minutes on damp mid-lengths and ends in place of the conditioner, and our own instructions already recommend it alongside this series.

Questions we get asked

No. There is no colourant in this bottle. It will not neutralise, tone or refresh anything. If brass is your problem you want a purple or blue toning product, which is a different category and one we do not make.

No, and neither will the shampoo. Nothing does. What the pair does is slow the rate, which for most people means stretching the gap between appointments rather than removing it.

Because on coloured hair the lengths are where everything happens. The dye is in the shaft, the damage is in the shaft and the fade happens there. This is not the third product in a routine, it is half of a two-product one.

Mid-length to ends, off the scalp. If your colour is more than a few months old at the ends, start there and work up, because that section has been through the most.

You can, and it is a good conditioner for anyone with dry or over-processed hair. If your hair is untreated you are paying for antioxidants aimed at a problem you do not have.

Yes, and it is not tone-specific because it deposits nothing. The mechanism is the same whether you are blonde, brunette or red, permanent or semi.

From your account, or one message to either studio. No minimum term, no cancellation fee.

Give us at least 48 hours before your next delivery is due. Inside that window the parcel is usually already packed, so it goes out as it is and the change applies from the order after.

Come and talk to us rather than quietly giving up. Eight weeks is the fair test, and a free scalp scan at either studio will show whether the scalp is moving or whether you are simply on the wrong bottle — if it is the wrong one, we will put you on the right one. And if you are holding something unopened, you can exchange it within 14 days of purchase for another product, or a treatment, of equal or higher value.
