The range

Greying Hair

Grey is not only a different colour — it is a different texture, coarser and drier, growing from a scalp that has changed as well. This range is built for that hair rather than for hiding it.

Is this you?

Three signs this range is yours.

One

Grey strands feel coarser than the rest

Wirier, drier, and they sit differently — you can find them by touch with your eyes shut.

Two

Your usual products stopped working

The shampoo you have used for years now leaves your hair dull or straw-like, and nothing has changed except the hair.

Three

It is harder to keep a shape

Grey grows in with a mind of its own, and styling that used to hold is gone by the afternoon.

The routine

Three steps, morning or night.

Used together the three build on each other. Used alone, each one still does its own job.

Dr Scalp Age-Defying Shampoo

Wash. Grey hair is more porous than pigmented hair — it takes water in fast and loses it just as fast. Wash warm and do not over-scrub.

Dr Scalp Age-Defying Conditioner

Condition the lengths and ends generously. This is the step grey hair asks for most. Keep it off the scalp.

Treat. Onto a dry or towel-dried scalp and leave it in. This works on the skin the next hair grows from, which is where texture is decided.

Dr Scalp Age-Defying Tonic$108.00

Conditioner looks after the hair you already have. The tonic works on the scalp the next hair grows out of, and that is where coarseness and dryness are settled before a strand ever appears. It is the active step in every Dr Scalp routine, and the one to begin with if you are beginning with one.

Used once daily on a dry or towel-dried scalp. The shampoo and conditioner make it work better; they are not a substitute for it.

What is actually happening

Grey is a change of texture, not only of colour

The pigment going is the part you can see. The part you feel is the follicle changing how it builds the strand.

  1. Colour comes from pigment cells inside the follicle, and they slow down with age. That part is normal, and it is not reversible.

  2. But the same follicle also changes how it makes the hair — a thinner cuticle, and less of the oil that used to coat it.

  3. So the strand comes out drier and coarser, and it loses moisture faster than the hair growing beside it.

  4. Meanwhile the scalp itself is producing less oil than it did, so there is less coming up to help.

You cannot argue with the pigment. You can do a great deal about the texture.

Small habits, real cost

What makes it worse without you noticing

None of these turns hair grey. All of them make grey hair look drier and rougher than it needs to — and every one is free to fix.

  • Hot water takes what little oil grey hair has — wash warm, finish cool.

  • Grey has no pigment to absorb UV, so Singapore sun reaches it and dries it harder than it does dark hair.

  • Skipping conditioner because your roots feel fine leaves the driest hair on your head with nothing at all.

  • Brushing dry grey hair from the roots down snaps it. Start at the ends and work upwards.

  • Heat styling to force coarse hair into shape costs you more than the shape is worth.

  • A cotton pillowcase pulls moisture out of dry hair all night. Silk or satin does not.

Common questions

Each range is built around one scalp concern, and every product page says who it is for and who it is not for. If you are not sure, a scalp scan at either studio reads your scalp in four zones and tells you which range fits. You are not obliged to buy anything at the end of it.

You can start with one. The tonic is the active step in every Dr Scalp routine — it stays on the scalp and does the work between washes — so if you are only going to use one product, use that. The shampoo and conditioner make the tonic work better; they are not a substitute for it.

Texture answers first — grey hair that is taking conditioner properly feels different within two or three washes. The scalp side is slower, a month or more, because it can only show in hair that has not grown out yet.

No, and you should be wary of anything that says it will. Pigment cells slow with age and nothing in a bottle restarts them. What this range does is handle everything else that changes at the same time — coarser, drier hair growing from a scalp that makes less oil than it used to. Grey hair that is looked after reads as deliberate. Grey hair that is dry reads as neglected, and that is the difference most people are actually responding to.

Yes, and people often do — a shampoo from one range with a tonic from another, for example. What you should not do is layer two tonics at once. If you are unsure about a combination, message us before you buy using the contact details at the foot of this page.

Tell your doctor what you are using and follow what they say — that is the only answer anyone should give you here. Every ingredient is listed in full on each product page so you can take it to them, and our therapists will go through it with you at a scan if that is easier.
