Oil Control series · Step 2

Dr Scalp Oil Control Conditioner

You gave up on conditioner years ago because every one you tried had you greasy by lunchtime.

Flat at the crown. Ends that snap anyway.

An oily scalp does not mean oily hair. The lengths are usually dry, and avoiding conditioner to protect your roots is what left them that way.

A conditioner for the ends only, carrying the same sebum regulator as the shampoo.

  1. After shampooing, squeeze the water out of your hair first. A shaft already full of water cannot take anything else in.
  2. Work it through from mid-length to ends. Keep it off the roots.
  3. Leave it a minute, then rinse. Longer does not do more.
  4. Every wash. This is the easy habit in the routine to keep.

Fit

Is this the right one for you?

One problem per series. This is the Oil Control series. If your main problem is something else, one of the other five will do more for you than this will.

Choose this if

  • Your scalp is oily but your ends are dry and snapping
  • You stopped using conditioner because it made your roots greasy
  • Your hair is shoulder-length or longer
  • You are already using the Oil Control shampoo

Look elsewhere if

If your hair is short, put the $68 towards the tonic.

On a crop there is not much length to look after, and the tonic is where the oil control actually happens. Come back to this one when there is length worth conditioning. If you are not sure the Oil Control series is yours at all, the scan settles it.

Why it works

An oily scalp does not mean oily hair.

Sebum is made at the scalp and travels down the shaft. On short hair it reaches the ends. On anything shoulder-length or longer it does not get far, which is why the same head can have greasy roots and dry, splitting ends. Most people with oily scalps have been treating that as one problem. It is two.

So this one is built to go where the oil does not. The base is macadamia oil in a cetearyl alcohol emulsion, the same kind of conditioning cream you would use on dry hair, carrying the same Butyl Avocadate as the shampoo and the tonic. It is eighth on the ingredient list in the buy panel above. Horse chestnut, chamomile, rosemary, sage and nettle sit alongside it, as they do across the whole series.

What it will not do. It will not control oil at your scalp, because it never goes near your scalp. That is the shampoo's job and the tonic's. And if you put this on your roots it will do exactly the thing you have always been afraid of. That is not the product failing, that is the product being used wrong. Mid-length down.

What it actually does

Four jobs, and controlling oil is not one of them.

A conditioner used from mid-length down never touches your scalp, so it cannot regulate what your scalp produces. Here is what it actually does, all of it checkable on the ingredient list.

01 · It goes where the oil does not

Mid-length to ends

Sebum travels down the shaft and on long hair it does not get far. The ends are dry on the same head where the roots are greasy.

02 · It conditions without weight

Macadamia oil in a rinse-out base

Macadamia oil, third in the bottle, in a cream that rinses clean rather than leaving a film. That is the difference between soft ends and a flat crown.

03 · It carries the same regulator as the rest of the series

Butyl Avocadate, or 5αAVOCUTA

Eighth on the list, the same active as the shampoo and the tonic. From mid-length down it does less — the tonic is where it earns its money.

04 · It is honest about the oils

Geranium, lavandin, cypress

Geranium, lavandin and cypress, plus fragrance, all rinsed out. If your scalp is dry and uncomfortable as well, start with Sensitive.

What to expect

Week by week, and the week that actually counts.

A conditioner is the one product in the routine you can feel the same day, which is also why it is easy to overrate. The signal worth waiting for is further down this list.

  1. Week 1–2It combs outThe ends run through a comb without catching, and the roots are exactly as they were. That second half is the point.
  2. Week 3–6The ends stop snappingLess breakage when you brush it or tie it up. If your crown has gone flat, you are applying it too high. Mid-length down.
  3. Week 8The week to judge itJudge this bottle on the ends. The oil at your roots is the shampoo's and the tonic's business, and week eight is when we re-scan that.
  4. Month 3–6You stop avoiding conditionerThe habit you gave up years ago comes back, without the trade-off that made you give it up.
The Oil Control routine

Step two of three.

The shampoo takes the oil off. This one looks after the lengths you have been neglecting to protect your roots. The tonic regulates the gland between washes, which is where most of the change comes from. Used alone it still helps. Used together it is a system.

Guessing is expensive. Your first treatment is $59 and it opens with an AI scan of your scalp, so the next thing you buy is the one you actually need.

Before you buy

Questions we get asked

If your hair is shoulder-length or longer, yes. Your ends are drier than you think, because sebum does not travel far down a long shaft. If your hair is short, buy the tonic first and come back to this when there is length worth conditioning.

Not if it never touches them. Mid-length to ends, every time. That single instruction is the whole difference between this working and confirming everything you were ever afraid of.

Roughly where your hair sits if you gather it in one hand and let go. Below the ears is a safe rule. When in doubt, go lower.

About a minute, then rinse. Longer does not do more. Squeezing the water out of your hair first makes a bigger difference than leaving it on longer.

Yes. It is a rinse-out conditioner with nothing in it that strips tone. If fade is your main concern rather than grease, the Colour Protect series is the better fit.

Come and talk to us rather than quietly giving up. Eight weeks is the fair test, and a free scalp scan at either studio will show whether the scalp is moving or whether you are simply on the wrong bottle — if it is the wrong one, we will put you on the right one. And if you are holding something unopened, you can exchange it within 14 days of purchase for another product, or a treatment, of equal or higher value.
